GlyphBox-and-Whisker Plots
4 interactives
Build a box plot
Students drag five markers (min, Q1, median, Q3, max) and the box plot redraws around them live. Checks the five-number summary of a real data set.
Choosing a display: categorical data
The data is names, not numbers. Students choose between a bar graph, a pie chart and a pictograph, and learn that the right answer depends on whether shares of a whole or a young audience matter. From Sean's display-choice bank.
Choosing a display: quantitative data
The data is numbers. Students choose between a dot plot, a stem-and-leaf plot, a histogram and a box plot, weighing how many observations there are and whether groups are being compared. From Sean's display-choice bank.
What type of variable is it?
Four zones in a meaningful grid: categorical on the left (nominal, ordinal), quantitative on the right (discrete, continuous). Students place each variable, so the two big decisions happen in one gesture. From Sean's 48-variable bank.
